Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a private, not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary in northern Kenya, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area began as a cattle ranch owned by the Craig-Douglas family in the 1920s. It is a safe home for the for the critically endangered black rhino and the endangered Grevy’s zebra, as well as the elephant, giraffe, lion, wild dog and home to more than 490 species of birds.  Lewa is a leading model for community-based conservation, integrating wildlife protection with programs for community development.
