The Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife conservation areas, located in southwestern Kenya along the border with Tanzania. Renowned for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, it is part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The reserve is named after the indigenous Maasai people who inhabit the area. The word “Mara” means “spotted” in the Maa language, a reference to the landscape dotted with short acacia trees.

The Mara is an extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and is primarily open grassland savannah with acacia trees. The Mara River and its tributaries provide water year-round. The main reserve spans 1,510 square kilometers (580 sq mi) but is part of the much larger Greater Mara ecosystem, which includes several conservancies such as Mara North and Olare Motorogi that are leased from Maasai landowners and offer a more exclusive, less crowded safari experience. The Mara is home to over 95 mammal species and more than 500 species of birds.
