Meru National Park is a rugged, wild, and restored wilderness in eastern Kenya, famous as the setting for the book and film Born Free. Once decimated by poaching, the park has been successfully revitalized and offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-path safari experience away from the crowds. It is known for its diverse habitats and for being one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinoceroses in its protected sanctuary. The park is bisected by 13 permanent, mountain-fed rivers, creating green, lush riverine habitats with doum and raffia palms that stand in contrast to the drier savannah.

The park features a varied landscape that includes acacia woodland, open grasslands, swamps, and volcanic rock formations called kopjes, including the iconic Mughwango Hill. Located in the shadow of Mount Kenya, the park offers stunning views of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak. The Tana River forms the park’s southern boundary, with the dramatic Adamson Falls marking a prominent feature. The park is forever linked to conservationists Joy and George Adamson, who raised and released the famous lioness, Elsa, in this park. Visitors can find Elsa’s grave near the Adamson Falls on the Tana River.
