The Samburu National Reserve is a rugged and arid wilderness in northern Kenya, known for its unique wildlife, vibrant culture, and less-crowded safari experience. The Ewaso Ng’iro River runs through the reserve, creating a lush riverine habitat that attracts a diverse range of animals and birdlife. The reserve is situated in Samburu northern Kenya. It is part of the larger Samburu ecosystem, which also includes the neighboring Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves. The rugged, semi-arid plains are characterized by acacia trees, thorn bushes, and vast savannahs. The landscape is framed by volcanic mountains, including Mount Koitogor and Mount Ololokwe.

The reserve is famous for the “Samburu Special Five”—rare species that have adapted to the region’s dry conditions and are often not found in southern Kenya’s more popular parks. The reserve is home to Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, Beisa Oryx and big cats such as lions and leopards and to more than 450 bird species.
